“It is always a risk when you decide to choose your freedom, your personal evolution over the fear, over your comfort zone or over living in someone else’s expectations of who you should be. You have to actively choose freedom every single day. Because it comes with great sacrifice: […] you may lose some people, you may gain some people, you just don’t know.”

– Janelle Monáe, on BBC6 The First Time with Janelle Monáe

“I am fear of real world,”Aiden told me in a shrinking voice.” So,i am trying to stay in a cartoon world, with my own terms and my own imagination,i am really happy with it”.I puzzled a little, because in major times he is in non-relaying chats and plays and the people surrounding him don't understand what is the meaning and what type of games he is playing.

I sit beside him . Aiden is 7years old boy now studying in 2nd grade. He is very brilliant at studying, reading, writing, gaming, etc anything gives him a continuous flow of energy even if it is throwing sand from a pile of sand . But he doesn't know how to play with others because he didn't get exposure to it in the closed apartment in the middle of the city. So he is always feeling difficulty handling emotions, verbal communication, and controlling the actions or sounds that disturb others. I patted him gently and said “No problem, you can choose your freedom, you can play in your comfort zone”.I felt some discomfort by saying this but i remind myself small efforts, and repeat often can also take us our goals and dreams.I descided to wait for some time.

As the days went by, I continued to observe Aiden’s interactions and his unique way of navigating the world around him. His passion for the cartoon world and his own imagination were undeniable, and I could see how it brought him joy and comfort. However, I also recognized that there was a need to strike a balance between his world of imagination and the real world.

One day, while sitting beside Aiden as he engrossed himself in his cartoon world, I decided to gently introduce him to the idea of exploring the real world as well. I began by sharing stories of real-life adventures and experiences, highlighting the beauty and wonders that the world beyond his imagination had to offer. Aiden listened intently, his curiosity piqued.

I also encouraged him to take small steps outside his comfort zone. We started with simple activities like nature walks or engaging in creative projects that involved interacting with others.

I made sure to create a supportive environment where Aiden felt safe to express his emotions and communicate in his own unique way.

Over time, Aiden’s confidence grew. He began to venture beyond his cartoon world, cautiously at first, but with increasing enthusiasm. I enrolled him in art classes, where he could channel his imagination into tangible creations, and in group activities that gradually helped him learn to socialize and collaborate with others.

As Aiden stepped out of his comfort zone, there were moments of struggle and uncertainty. There were times when he found it challenging to control his emotions or adapt to new situations. But just like a cartoon character facing challenges in their story, Aiden persevered. He faced each obstacle with determination, drawing strength from his own resilience and the support of those around him.

With time, Aiden’s ability to handle emotions and engage in verbal communication improved. He learned how to express his thoughts and feelings more effectively, and he discovered the joy of forming meaningful connections with others. As he continued to actively choose freedom over his fear of the real world, Aiden’s personal evolution was evident to all who knew him.

Years later, I had the privilege of witnessing a grown-up Aiden confidently addressing a room full of people. He stood before them, sharing his journey of self-discovery and the transformative power of embracing both his imagination and the real world. Aiden had become a well-mannered, empathetic, and charismatic individual who understood the importance of personal growth, freedom, and connection.

Reflecting on his past, Aiden acknowledged the challenges he had faced and the sacrifices he had made. He spoke of the people who had entered his life, those who had left, and how every interaction had contributed to his growth. With a deep sense of gratitude, Aiden exemplified the very essence of Janelle Monáe’s quote — the willingness to choose freedom and personal evolution over fear and comfort, no matter the sacrifices.

Aiden’s story became an inspiration to many, a testament to the transformative power of embracing one’s uniqueness, facing fears, and choosing to actively engage with the world around them. And as Aiden continued to flourish, he carried the lessons of his cartoon world and his real-world experiences, embodying the spirit of growth, resilience, and connection.
